Ordo Lucis

All Members of Ancon Lodge are encouraged to join the Ordo Lucis, which meets virtually twice a month to read and discuss Masonic and related texts.

This year’s texts are:

Illustrations of Masonry

William Preston

William Preston’s Illustrations of Masonry (first published in 1772) is one of the most influential texts in the history of English-speaking Freemasonry. One of Preston’s most lasting contributions is his organization of Masonic lectures, which form the foundation of the Preston-Webb ritual practiced by the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

The Freemason’s Monitor on Illustrations of Masonry

Thomas Smith Webb

Thomas Smith Webb’s The Freemason’s Monitor (first published in 1797) is an American adaptation and condensation of William Preston’s Illustrations of Masonry, designed specifically for practical lodge use. While Preston’s work is expansive and philosophical, Webb’s Monitor is functional, instructional, and distinctly American in tone and purpose. Webb was the founder of the York Rite in American Freemasonry and this work is foundational to the Preston-Webb ritual practiced by the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

Old Tiler Talks

Carl H. Claudy

Old Tiler Talks (first published in 1923) by Carl H. Claudy is a collection of short, informal essays framed as conversations between a seasoned lodge tiler and a curious new Mason. Unlike formal ritual texts, the book’s purpose is interpretive and reflective, helping Masons understand the meaning behind the symbols, customs, and culture of the Craft rather than memorizing lectures or procedures. Through plain language and a conversational tone, Claudy explores Freemasonry as a way of thinking and living, emphasizing personal growth, ethical conduct, and brotherhood.
